A first collection of poems from the winner of the Cuffer Prize for short fiction Our Gleaming Bones Unrobed is a haunting debut, a poetry collection thematically focused on discovering the structure (the figurative bones) beneath the appearance (or skin) of a situation. This poetry is at once memento mori a reminder and celebration of our mortality and a lyrical exploration of the spirituality of the mundane, the possibility for revelation found in the commonplace. The universe’s heart is a ruined house. Written on the door is this you cannot do a thing that has not already been done. from On the Occasion of a Book Burning”
Our Gleaming Bones Unrobed Grant Loveys Books
"In a separation it is the one who is not really in love who says the more tender things." (Marcel Proust)And so begins Grant Loveys' poetry collection, Our Gleaming Bones Unrobed. And in fact, one does get the sense that the more sensitive parts of our anatomy have been exposed--the secret wishes hidden in our hearts, the bitter toxins we collect in our livers, the passion we hoard in our breasts.
Loveys' prose is deeply moving and visceral--felt emotionally much more easily than understood intellectually. He gives us a wide-ranging collection of gut-punches:
* A robot asking its master for the definition of love ("love is weight ... the pressure of pleasure")
* Children of addicts ("our lungs filled with the aerosols of poverty")
* Roving wolves on the hunt for an injured ewe ("oil moving overland")
* Elvis trading his talent for love ("but with the dowsing rod in his throat he could find melody in a shopping list")
* The cost of parenthood ("and I'd like to think it was only when your father descended through fire bruised like a banished angel and hauled you ashore clasped in his battered wings that you even considered the perils of sainthood")
* A woman receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer ("searching for something not microscopic for once, something she can hurt with her hands")
* Nature's ferocity ("they understood the crooked gamble their lives are; the sea calls in all debts")
When he writes, "Life has a way of demanding answers to questions you didn't know it asked," we know this won't be an easy read. From the first to the last, the imagery is stark and haunting, pulling at our insides to make us question the things we take for granted.
